About First Ourselves

Compassionate solutions to heal sugar addiction, binge eating, overeating and a negative body image

Compassion is a spiritual act of service, a doorway to belonging. As we open our hearts to every aspect of ourselves, we open our hearts to each other, to our world, and to life itself. This is the meaning of First Ourselves. – Karly Randolph Pitman, founder

Welcome! We’re so glad you’re here. First Ourselves offers compassionate solutions to heal from sugar addiction, binge eating, overeating and a negative body image. We offer a community of people supporting one another as we journey out of food “stuff” with a gentle, compassionate approach, reclaiming our inner goodness, wholeness, and worthiness.

At First Ourselves, you’ll find hundreds of helpful articles, podcasts, audio programs, a compassion based support group, and a free private women’s forum to help you find self acceptance, self love, and self compassion as you gently heal a sugar addiction, lose weight, end emotional eating, and love your body. This is not a “biggest loser,” boot camp, hard core, strident, work your tail off approach to healing, but one based in self kindness, intuitive listening, unfolding, and nurturing.

You’ve probably already spent lots of time learning about nutrition and weight loss. These are the “how tos,” the external behaviors that lead to health. You already know you want to be doing these things. We can feel so frustrated when we know what to do but find it difficult to do it.

Please, dear one – don’t judge yourself. The ability to follow through does not come from self discipline or will power. It arises from emotional healing.

What gets in the way of our following through on the “how tos” is pain – the internal barriers like emotional wounds, fears, and all the ways we try to protect ourselves from this pain. (We run away from it, we eat!, we diet, we shop, we check email, we think and plan, we busy ourselves, we suppress it, we avoid it, we deny it, we do anything but feel it.)

Our programs offer a pathway for emotional healing. We’ll help you heal these internal barriers so you can grow:  so you can end painful behaviors and patterns (like sugar bingeing, overeating, turning to food for comfort – all the food based ways you run from your pain.)  This combination of physical, spiritual, and emotional healing is what allows you to be free in body, mind and spirit from an eating disorder or sugar addiction.

Karly Randolph Pitman started First Ourselves in 2006 from a desk in her basement to chronicle her growth out of a 20 year struggle with multiple eating disorders -  sugar addiction, overeating, bulimia, binge eating disorder, compulsive dieting, and body hatred. Along the way, her personal story evolved into a passion to foster healing and wholeness for anyone hurting from food stuff. Karly writes books and programs, leads the First Ourselves support group, teaches workshops, speaks to groups, and coaches individuals to help them compassionately heal from food stuff. What makes First Ourslves unique?

We believe we heal wthin the context of relationship – in this case, the relationship we have with ourselves. We do this through the power of unconditional love. When we embrace all parts of our tender humanity – such as our emotions, hurts, feelings, body, thoughts, and more – with love, we feel safe to heal, grow and change.

In our programs, you’ll learn how to use self compassion, self kindness, and self acceptance to change your relationship with food, your body and yourself. Ours is both an inner journey of self love and an outer journey of self care and healing.
